Bruce and Helen Herbert
Throughout my life it has been my good fortune to have been befriended by good people who have had a major impact on me. Bruce and Helen, now passed on, were such good people.
While participating at the 1955 World Scout Jamboree, where I was a member of the administrative staff, I got to know a patrol of scouts from the San Francisco Bay area. Follow the Jamboree, we stayed in touch and, more specifically, with Bruce Jr.
When I emigrated from Canada to the States in 1960, Bruce and Helen invited me to stay with them until I found a job and was able to manage on my own. As time evolved, I became their “adopted” son or “foreign exchange student” and participated in all the family gatherings.
Their friendship and generosity really came to the fore when I was required to recuperate for three months after spinal surgery which obligated me to be flat on my back. Not only did they open their home to me for these three months but included my mother who had come over from Scotland to provide for my care.
I would like to think that as the years have passed I have been able to help others; perhaps not to the same extent as Bruce and Helen but at least to share a similar friendship and generosity.
